Auction

This 1984 Renault R5 Turbo 2 shows 2,587 miles and was imported and federalized by the seller when new. Power comes from the original mid-mounted turbocharged 1.4L inline-four sending power to the rear wheels via a 5-speed manual transaxle. The seller originally purchased three new R5 Turbo 2s, selling the other two early on but keeping this one stored as an investment for the past 34 years. The car has original paint and its original tires and was last serviced and driven in 2005. It has not been started since and will require a major service and inspection to be roadworthy. This R5 T2 is now offered with a clean Illinois title in the seller’s name.

The seller states that the car has never received any paintwork. The exterior remains stock and unmodified with wide box flares, ‘Turbo 2’ door script, and factory wheels with the original Michelin TRX tires still mounted.

Photos in the gallery show a small ding on the driver door and a scratch on the front bumper near the driver headlight.

The interior features tan cloth upholstery with the stock leather-wrapped Iso-Delta 3-spoke steering wheel and shift knob in place. The original Renault factory-applied plastic sheeting still covers the carpeting on the rear parcel shelf above the engine compartment. The headliner in the passenger rear section is loose and the rear hatch hydraulic struts need to be replaced.

Orange Jaeger instrumentation includes an imperial speedometer and 8k tachometer. The seller states that the odometer still registers in kilometers and thus the indicated 4,181 km equates to 2,587 miles.

The mid-mounted turbocharged 1.4L Cléon-Fonte inline-four features Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection and a Garrett T3 turbocharger. A plaque on the engine’s valve cover appears to be from Stanjek-Motor in Mönchengladbach, West Germany and has been there since new.

A few photos in the gallery detail the condition of the underside, specifically surface rust on many of the suspension parts. In 2004, service included cleaning of the fuel injectors, fuel tank, and brakes. The car was driven ~1000 miles and then put away. The battery was removed and the car has now been stored for 13 years. The seller states that the car rolls on its wheels easily.

Vetture Inc. was the company the seller formed to import the car into the United States. He recalls that the EPA/DOT federalization process was lengthy and the US title was finally issued in 1986.
